I'm really keen to go night riding. Its fantastic and a really different thrill to riding in the day plus there's a smug satisfaction from being out when everyone else is tucked up in bed. Night rides tend to be by necessity really relaxed and laid back; cake, hipflasks and "midnight" feasts are positively encouraged.
All you need are the usual biking kit (bike, helmet, warm clothes) and some lights. Commuting lights aren't any good but there are several sets of proper night lights around for under £50, thats £50 for as much fun as you can manage or a couple of nights out on the beer. You know it makes sense.

I've got a Nightrider Trail Rat 2.0. Around £80 from CRC or Wiggle ar the moment but I'm also thinking of getting a set of cheaper lights as a supplement/alternative/backup/loaners but I haven't decided which ones yet.
I will suggest again that the club looks to buy a couple of sets of cheap lights on the equipment budget - lets face it, its only in the summer when nobody is here that you can do evening rides without lights.

I'll be up for some night rides too....just got a bit of a dodgy knee at the moment. Will hopefully be out a week on sunday....I still need to join the club too.
As for lights....make yer own! 12V halogen downlighter, bit of waste pipe with compression fitting ends....12V lead acid battery (rather heavy though) and a bit of wiring!! should be able to get it all from maplins.
