Fold the chain in a U shape so you've got the link kind of on its own, then use pliers or other such gripping tool diagonally across the link to squeeze it open. Alternatively i have the actual tool to remove them....

I have a set of master link pliers if you want to come down and use them. They are very useful and make sure you keep the power link when you take it out.

The reason you can't get them apart by hand is 10speed powerlinks aren't reusable. KMC make resusable ones but they are still running 6.25mm chains although apparently they are going down to the industry standard 6mm soon.

I've got to say that I always reuse sram 10 speed powerlinks and i've never had any problems. Never got stiff, bent or snapped and you know I ride every where in a massive gear

haha yes John you are Sheffields answer to Cancellara! Yeah I've read mixed stuff but decided with "They can be opened and closed many times but should not be used on a new chain, if the link is an old one. New chain, new link." So I'll give it a go I guess and hope for the best

That's what we say to people at work, though the manufacturer obviously recommends you use a new link everytime.
