The winter has taken its toll on my bike and basically the front mech is playing up. Its indexing fine but when i try to change down it just doesnt want to pop back into place, i was wondering if just a bit of wd40 or something similar would do the trick, or it if it needs a new cable? any advice?

ye bang a bit of GT85 there n give the spring a bit of a stretching - most probs best sticking a new set of cable inners n outers on for some slick shifting though :-)

Might be as simple as unhooking the outer from the frame, polishing the inner with an oiled rag and spraying oil in the outer. You'll be able to tell when you've done it enough if the outer moves freely all along the cable. Bonus of this is that you shouldn't need to fiddle with the indexing after replacing the cable.
But Replacing inners+outers will give best results. The club shop sells inner+outers for cheap, replacing them should get you back to almost new shifting. Talk to Henry or Ruari if you want to buy them.
