Sorry Clara - I don't race much so I'm not the best person the help. If you ride with Shefrec it would be good to ask the secretary what races are on round here and you could also have a crack at some sportives.
Wait for ben, jamie, johnny or andy to respond.

Hey Clara, to start racing you'll need to apply to British Cycling for a provisional race licence (cheap but you can't pick up points on it, allowing you to get a feel for it) or a full racing licence which will cost you a bit more. I'm not an expert but I don't think you get very many womens only races, the only place I've seen that is at Crystal Palace down here in London, so most likely you'll end up in a field of mostly guys in a cat3/4 race- not to put you off, just be ready for a challenge. Speak to someone like Mark at Sheff rec, see if you can do some evening 10 mile TT's and maybe have a go at the evening chain gang and also find out if they have any other women that are racing at the club.
